Yesterday, my class went on a field trip to Crawford lake to learn more about first nations the Wendat people. The tour guide took us to a little hike in the forest and she was talking about the animals, like wolves and bear cubs, the first nations kept as pets and talked about the food they used to eat.
Then the tour guide brought us to the Meromictic lake known as Crawford lake. A meromictic lake has layers of water that do not intermix. She said at the very bottom of the lake scientist found ancient corn pollen. For scientists to find this corn pollen from a long time ago, it meant that their were first nation groups settled near the lake over six hundred years ago.
After that our class visited the village and played a few games outdoors. We also went inside the long houses that the first nations used to live in. The tour guide talked about the sports the first nations used to play like lacrosse. She told us that only the men could play lacrosse and there were 100 men on one team. The we started a fire with milkweed and birch bark in one of the long houses that the first nations lived in. We also learned that the way to put out a fire at the time of the first nations was to use sand instead of water.
Here is a picture of my class and I at Crawford lake. Thank you for reading this post, blog to you soon !
